Black Christmas trees
A black tree is a modern tree: a dark frame or dark foliage that turns into an outline of light after dark. The black trees here are microdot and dewdrop designs from 4ft to 7ft, with 500 to 1,700 warm white LEDs fitted along every twig, and the 6ft Black Microdot Tree with 1,300 static dewdrop LEDs at £119 is the most ordered. By day they are a slender black sculpture; at night the black disappears and only the lights are left. Most are rated for outdoors, so they stand either side of a front door as well as in a hall or a living room. Everything here is delivered free.

Why choose black
Black does two things a green tree cannot. It fits a room with dark walls, concrete, steel or a monochrome scheme without looking like a seasonal interruption. And it makes the lights the whole point: against black, warm white LEDs read as points of gold, and the tree becomes a light fitting for December rather than a decorated object. A black tree beside a green one in a large room gives the second tree a reason to exist.
Lights and decorations
These trees arrive with the LEDs fitted, almost all warm white, with twinkle and static modes and a timer. Most people hang nothing on them. If you want colour, a dozen matt baubles in gold, copper or white, or a handful of brass stars, is enough; anything more hides the shape. Cool white LEDs would make a black tree look stark, which is why the makers chose warm white.
Indoor and outdoor
The black microdot trees carry the indoor and outdoor rating, with a sealed transformer. Stand one on a hard surface, keep the transformer under cover, and it will run outside for the season. Indoors it needs a socket within the lead length listed on the product page.
Sizes
The 4ft black trees suit a porch step or a flat; the 6ft at £119 is the living-room size; the 7ft black trees are for a hall. The same designs in white are on the white trees page, and the silver-tipped and grey versions on the grey and silver page.
Common questions
Are black trees pre-lit?
Yes, every black tree in the range has warm white LEDs fitted; the 6ft has 1,300 and the 7ft 1,700. They are not sold unlit.
Can a black tree go outside?
The microdot trees with the outdoor rating can, and most people use them that way, either side of a front door. Keep the transformer dry.
Do I need to decorate a black tree?
No. They are designed to be left bare with the lights as the decoration. A few matt gold baubles are the most anyone adds.
Is there a black foliage tree?
The black trees here are lit frames rather than needle trees. For a dark needle tree, the Midnight Blue Fir under unlit trees is the closest.
