How a water spinner works
The lantern is sealed and filled with water and fine white flakes. A small motor at the base, run from the batteries, spins the water so the flakes rise and fall round the scene, and a warm white LED lights it from below. Switch it on and it snows for as long as the batteries last; most have a six-hour timer. They are made for a side table, a windowsill, a hall table or a child's room.
The scenes
The Oblong Lantern Water Spinners at £19.99 have a snowman or a Santa inside and are the most ordered. The Telephone Santa Snow Swirl at £16.99 is the smallest. The Children Decorating Christmas Tree Magical Lantern is the most detailed scene. Each is about 20cm to 30cm tall.
Batteries and care
Three AA batteries, not included, run a spinner for several weeks on the timer. Keep the lantern upright and do not open it; the water is sealed for the life of the piece. Store it upright in its box, out of frost.
