Lining a path
A set of eight stakes at a metre apart lines 7m of path on one side, or 3.5m on both. Push the stakes in on the lawn edge or in the border beside the path so the lights are seen from the gate. The spiral trees stand 30 to 60cm tall and are the ones to use at a gatepost or either side of a step; the star and snowflake stakes sit lower and mark the edge of a path.
Power
Eight sets are battery powered, with the box on a short lead that can be hidden under a shrub, and eight are mains powered through a transformer that lives indoors or in a weatherproof box. For a long drive the mains sets are the better choice; for a short path near the door, batteries save running a cable.
Colours
Warm white and multi coloured are the main groups, with white and a red-and-white set. Most sets have a static mode and a twinkle mode.
Ground conditions
The stakes are designed for lawn and soil. In gravel or hard ground, push them into a plant pot of compost and stand the pot where you want the light.
Common questions
How many stake lights for a path?
One per metre on one side of the path, so a set of eight covers a typical front path from the gate to the door.
Can they be left out in rain?
Yes, the stake lights are rated for outdoor use. Keep the battery box or transformer sheltered.
How tall are the spiral tree stakes?
Thirty to sixty centimetres above the ground, with a 15cm stake below.
Will they go into hard ground?
They are made for lawn and soil. In gravel, stand each stake in a pot of compost.
