Statement sizes
A standard bauble is 6cm to 8cm. The 14cm spheres at £2.99 are nearly twice that and the 20cm at £9.99 are the size of a football; they go on the lowest branches of a tall tree, hang from a porch roof, sit in a bowl as a table centre, or line a shop window. Three 20cm baubles in a wicker bowl is a finished centrepiece. On a 7ft or 8ft tree, a dozen 14cm baubles low down and standard sizes above gives the tree a base.
Finishes and colours
Shiny red, silver and gold are the statement sizes. The midnight blue sets, six of them, suit a silver and white scheme or the Midnight Blue Fir. Seven baubles in the group are battery lit from the inside, with a small LED behind frosted plastic, and glow on the tree or in a jar.
Shatterproof
These are moulded plastic with a mirror finish. Dropped on a floor they bounce. That makes them the choice for the lower branches of any tree in a house with a toddler or a dog, for a tree in a shop or a school, and for a slim tree that moves when someone brushes past.
Hanging
The 20cm baubles weigh more than they look and need a sturdy branch near the trunk or a hook screwed into a beam. The 14cm sit on any mid-tree branch.

Are shatterproof baubles safe for children?
They do not break into shards. Keep the smallest ones away from under-threes as with any small object.

Can I hang the big baubles outside?
Under a porch roof, yes. The mirror finish dulls if it is rained on all season.
