Christmas trees £200 and over

Above £200 are the trees built to be kept for a decade: the 7.5ft Lawrence Fir with 800 warm white LEDs at £459, the Snowy Dorchester Spruce in real-feel foliage at £329 unlit or £399 lit, the 7ft Ben Nevis Pine pre-lit at £309, and the fullest 8ft firs up to £630. These are trees with 2,000 tips and more, moulded PE branches down to the inner tips, and lights spaced through the depth of the tree rather than along the outside. Every price includes VAT, and the two-person delivery that a tree this size needs is free.

What the money buys

Density first. A luxury 7ft tree carries two to three times the tips of a standard one, and the branches are layered so the tree is as full at the centre as at the edge. Then realism: the outer tips are moulded from real fir and spruce branches, with a matt finish and a slight colour variation, and the trunk and the branch hinges are hidden by the foliage. Then lighting: 600 to 800 LEDs wired from the trunk outward, in two or three sections that each plug into the next, with a timer on the lead. The stand is heavier and the trunk thicker.

The trees in this band

The 7.5ft Lawrence Fir Luxury Pre Lit with 800 LEDs is the brightest tree in the shop. The 7.5ft Snowy Dorchester Spruce, real-feel foliage with a snow finish and 600 LEDs, is the one most people pick for a hall. The 7ft Ben Nevis Pine pre-lit at £309 has cones and red berries wired in and 380 LEDs. At 8ft the pre-lit Grampian Pine and the fullest luxury fir at £630 are for a double-height space.

Cost over ten years

A £330 tree kept ten years costs £33 a year, against £50 to £60 for a cut tree each December plus disposal. The LEDs on a pre-lit tree this size draw about 6W, which is a few pence a night at the current electricity price. The branches should be fluffed and stored dry; the lights are the part that ages, which is why these trees are built in sections that can be replaced.

Delivery and assembly

Trees in this band arrive in two or three boxes by two-person courier, who agrees a day with you first. Assembly is three hinged sections and a plug between each; the bottom section of an 8ft tree is a two-person lift. Allow an hour including fluffing the tips, which is what turns a boxed tree into a full one.

Common questions

Is a £400 tree worth it over a £150 one?

If the tree is going in a large room, will be kept for years and you want it to look like a real fir without the decorations doing the work, yes. In a small room a £150 tree looks just as good once decorated.

What does real-feel mean?

The outer branch tips are moulded from casts of real branches in polyethylene, so each tip has the shape and texture of a fir needle cluster rather than a cut strip of PVC.

Do luxury trees have a longer warranty?

The maker's warranty is stated on each product page; the lights on these trees are built in replaceable sections, which is the practical difference.

How many lights do they have?

Six hundred to eight hundred warm white LEDs on the pre-lit models, wired through the depth of the branches. The 7.5ft Lawrence Fir has 800.
