Cluster lights
Forty-six cluster sets, nearly all from Premier Decorations, from 480 LEDs at £19.99 to 2,000. On a cluster set the LEDs sit on short stems branching off the main cable, so the bulbs are packed three or four times closer than on a string set and the effect is a solid band of light rather than dots.

What a cluster set does differently
A string set spaces its LEDs 10cm apart along one cable. A cluster set hangs them on 5cm stems in groups along the cable, so a metre of cluster carries 100 or more LEDs where a string carries ten. Wrapped round a tree the band of light is continuous; wound along a banister, a garland or a railing it reads as a lit rope. It is the set to buy when you want the tree to glow rather than sparkle, and it needs fewer metres to do it.
Sizes
A 480-LED cluster covers a 5ft or 6ft tree, a 720 set a 6ft or 7ft tree, a 960 set a 7ft or 8ft tree, and the 2,000 sets are for a large tree or a long garland run. The 960 Warm White Multi Action Cluster with timer at £34.99 and its vintage gold twin are the two most ordered light sets in the shop. Lit lengths run from about 6m to 25m.
Colours
Warm white and white are the biggest groups, with a mixed white and warm white set that twinkles between the two. Rainbow sets, eight of them, cycle through colour along the string. Vintage gold gives a deep amber. Because cluster bulbs are so dense, a single colour looks richer than a multi coloured set does in this format.
Outdoor use
All 46 sets are rated for indoor and outdoor use, with a transformer for a sheltered spot. Clusters are popular on porch railings, garden arches and the trunk of a real tree outside because the dense light shows from a distance. Three sets run on batteries for a spot without a socket.
Common questions
How many cluster LEDs for a 6ft tree?
A 480 or 720 set. Because the bulbs are so close together, a 480 cluster looks as bright as a 1,000-LED string set.
Are cluster lights hard to untangle?
They tangle less than strings because the short stems hold the cable in a loose rope. Wind the set onto a reel or a piece of card when it comes down.
Can I use cluster lights on a garland?
Yes, it is the best use after the tree: a 480 set lights a 2.7m garland end to end. The lit and plain garlands are under wreaths and garlands.
Which cluster set is the brightest?
The 2,000-LED sets, then 960. Within a size, white is slightly brighter to the eye than warm white.
