Wreath sizes and doors
A standard UK front door is 838mm wide, and a wreath looks right at just over half the door's width: 45cm for a narrow door or a flat, 50cm to 55cm for a standard door, 60cm for a wide or double door. The diameter listed is the outside edge, so a 60cm wreath with a bow is nearer 70cm overall. Hang it from a wreath hook over the top of the door or a suction hook on glass; a wreath with a battery light set needs the box tucked behind the foliage.
Garlands
Garlands are sold by length. A 1.8m garland does a mantelpiece; 2.7m does a banister on a straight flight; 5.4m does a staircase with a turn or a long shelf; the 10m tinsel garlands are for a shop or a hall. Faux pine garlands are wired, so they bend round a newel post and hold the shape. Tinsel garlands are lighter and come in gold, silver, red and natural green.
Lit or unlit
Twenty of the 43 come lit, almost all warm white, with a 5.4m Ultrabright garland carrying 860 LEDs and a 45cm Silver Cluster Wreath carrying 600. Sixteen are mains powered and four run on batteries, which is the practical choice for a front door. An unlit wreath takes a 100-LED battery set; an unlit 2.7m garland takes 200.
Indoor and outdoor
Twelve carry the indoor and outdoor rating and three are outdoor only; the rest are indoor pieces. A front-door wreath under a porch roof counts as sheltered; one on an exposed door should be an outdoor-rated model with a sealed battery box.
Common questions
What size wreath for a front door?
50cm to 55cm for a standard 838mm door. Go to 60cm for a wide or double door and 45cm for a narrow one or a flat.
How do I hang a wreath without damaging the door?
A wreath hook that hangs over the top edge of the door, or a suction hook on a glazed panel. Neither leaves a mark.
How long a garland for stairs?
2.7m for a straight flight of about 13 steps, 5.4m for a staircase with a landing. Wired pine garlands wrap the handrail; tinsel is tied on.
Can a wreath stay outside all December?
An outdoor-rated wreath can. Indoor wreaths last the season under a porch roof but fade and shed if they are rained on.
